Join us in a discussion of James McBride's Heaven and Earth Grocery Store. This is the story of Chicken Hill, PA a dilapidated neighborhood where immigrant Jews and African Americans lived side by side and shared ambitions and sorrows. Moshe integrated his theater and Chona ran the Heaven & Earth Grocery Store, where she often gave food to those who could not pay. When the state came looking for a deaf boy to institutionalize him, it was Chona and Nate Timblin, the Black janitor at Moshe's theater who worked together to keep the boy safe.
