Details
Mike Lane is a native of the coastlands of Virginia and North Carolina, but has lived and worked in Asia for almost 30 years, where from 2008 through 2014, he studied with accomplished and very patient artists in southern China. After returning to Virginia Beach in 2015, he continued to practice and teach traditional sumi-e art (“sumi-e” simply means black ink painting). Back in Virginia, it seemed natural to also apply the Asian ink and watercolor techniques to his beloved East-Coast American landscapes, flora, and fauna. His work primarily focuses on transitional spaces when time seem to pause and where transformation happens —a shallow marsh, the eddies creating a pause in a winding creek, a quiet meeting of butterflies in a garden, or a moment in a secluded mountain village.
His exhibition is titled: "Emergent Sum-ie".
