Program Description

Details

Join us as we celebrate African American Heritage. Today we will view the movie, Buffalo Soldiers which depicts African American men who fought in the Civil war and also helped "settle the west". Members of the black US Calvary were sent out west to settle the "Indian situation". Indians saw the black men with their dark skin and wooly hair and called them Buffalo Soldiers. Gradually, a truce was formed with the groups. They were both considered second class peoples and with the realization, “the enemy of my enemy is my friend”, work together. During the Civil War, many black men took care of the herds of cattle and thus were named Cowboys. There are some famous ones that stand out such as, Bill Pickett, Bass Reeves, and Nat Love.

Adults. Registration is not required.
